Servicing and maintenance

Servicing and repairs

We service home air conditioning systems — our own, and just as readily somebody else’s. If you have a unit on the wall and no idea who to ring about it any more, that is the situation this page is written for.

If somebody else fitted it

We service systems we did not fit

You do not have to have bought your system from Catrigg. A lot of systems around here were put in by a company that has since moved away, changed hands or stopped trading — or by someone who was never local to begin with and is not going to drive back over for a filter clean.

If you have air conditioning at home and it needs a service, has stopped heating or cooling properly, or has developed a fault, tell us what you have and what it is doing. It makes no difference who installed it, and there is no penalty for not having bought it from us.

Being straight about it

Where that stops

Two honest limits. If a system is old enough that the parts are no longer made, no amount of servicing fixes that, and we would rather say so than keep coming back and charging you to look at it.

And if the original installation was done badly — the wrong size unit for the room, or a condensate drain running the wrong way — servicing will not turn it into a good installation. We will tell you what we find and what it would take to put right, and then it is your decision.

Annual servicing

Three things that go wrong quietly

Air conditioning needs looking at once a year. We check the condition of the system, make sure it is running as it should, and look for anything starting to go wrong before it turns into a repair. None of the three below announce themselves — a system keeps running while all of them are happening, just worse and more expensively than it should.

  • The filter blocks up

The indoor unit pulls room air through a filter every time it runs, so the filter is slowly collecting everything in the room. As it blocks, less air gets through, and the system runs longer and works harder to reach the temperature you asked it for. It is the commonest fault on these systems and the easiest to put right.

  • The drain blocks

When a system is cooling it pulls water out of the air, which runs away down a small pipe to the outside. If that pipe blocks, the water has to go somewhere else, and where it goes is down your wall. This is the one that turns into a decorating job.

  • The refrigerant drops

The gas that does the actual work is sealed inside the pipework. If the charge falls, the system carries on running but stops heating or cooling properly, and the bills go up while it tries. Refrigerant may only be handled by someone F‑Gas certified — which is what that registration is for.

When something has gone wrong

Fault finding and repairs

If it has stopped working properly, tell us what system you have and what it is doing. We can come and look at it and work out what is causing it.

Whatever it turns out to be, you will be told what it is and what putting it right would cost before any of it happens.

Where we work

Based in Langcliffe, just outside Settle, covering the Ribble Valley, the Lakes, Kirkby Lonsdale, Settle and Skipton, across to Ilkley. The full list is here.

The service plan

There is a service plan for systems we fit, and it is open to systems we did not fit as well.

Tell us what you have and we will explain what the plan covers and what it costs.

Got a system and no one to ring?

Tell us the make if you know it, and roughly how old it is if you do not. We will take it from there.

Which system suits you depends on the room, the layout and the budget. That is a conversation to have at the survey, standing in the room, rather than a decision to make off a website.
